8 Day 9 Nights Moshi KilimanjaroTrekking via Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route is traditionally one of the quieter and lesser-known routes on the mountain. It is also the newest and probably the most diverse in terms of the ecological systems and landscapes it passes through. The first two days of this route take you through lush rainforest before you emerge into heath and moorland then join the Machame Route on the third day. This narrow trail, which begins on the Western side of Kilimanjaro, has some very steep and undulating sections.

After arrival at KIA Airport in Tanzania, you will be transferred to Moshi and checked in at one of the hotels in Moshi. Thereafter meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Rain Forest.
After breakfast, you will make your way to the Londorossi gate, which is about a 2-hour drive. After finalizing all the registration papers, you will continue another 15km on a bumpy road, which will take you to the starting point of your hiking trip that will take you deep into the rainforest. This day will be a short walk of the entire trek, about 3-3 hours, which gives you a small taste of what lies ahead in the coming days. The walk takes you through dense and unspoiled rainforest, which is different from the scenery you will walk through in the next couple of days. Your destination for the day is the beautiful Big Tree Camp at 2780m.

Note: This will be your first day at this altitude, the following is recommended.

  • Abstain from consuming alcohol and caffeine
  • Drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (little by little, frequently)
  • Take a Diamox pill to help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Most mountain climbers take Diamox in the morning, before they start their ascent, in order to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. We recommend you consult your physician prior to the trip in case of potential allergies.

At night, you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your waking breathing pattern, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Considering altitude, you may therefore start feeling sick and have a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.

This is a so-called acclimatizing day, where you will climb high but sleep low, giving you a good idea of how your body reacts to altitude. The landscape will once again change as you pass through the Barranco Valley with its big Senecas and smaller Lobelia plants.
